Assignment Application Deadline Moved

The deadline for parents to file assignment applications requesting their child attend a different school has been moved back one week to Feb. 6, 2015, to allow parents more time to make decisions in light of changes in transportation services.

Parents can expect to receive a letter detailing transportation availability for their children by the end of January. FWCS is in the process of reducing transportation spending by $2.5 million by the 2015-16 school year. The reduction is necessary because property tax caps, known as the Circuit Breaker, have reduced transportation funding by $9.3 million since 2009. This loss is expected to grow to $18.2 million by 2017. At the same time, expenses continue to increase.

Applications are available at schools and online at If there are more applicants than spaces available at any of the schools, lotteries will be held on Feb. 27, 2015, to determine admittance.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
