Principal Appointments Approved for 2022-23 School Year

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of School Trustees on Monday, May 23, approved several administrative appointments for the 2022-23 school year.


Dr. Virgil Griffin, Blackhawk Middle School Principal

Virgil Griffin returns to Fort Wayne Community Schools where he has spent the majority of his career. He joined FWCS in 2012 as an English teacher at South Side High School. He completed his administrative internship during the 2015-16 school year at New Tech Academy at Wayne High School and the following year became assistant principal at North Side High School. In 2018, he was named assistant principal at the Center for Academic Success at Nebraska and a year later became assistant principal at Snider High School. In Aug. 2020, he became an assistant professor in the Franks School of Education at Trine University. At Blackhawk, he replaces Zachary Harl, who is moving to South Side High School.


Amanda Henderson, Fairfield Elementary School Principal

Amanda Henderson joined FWCS in 2020 as the assistant principal at Haley Elementary School after spending 12 years as an educator in California. While in California, she served as an elementary teacher, literacy coach, assistant principal and principal. At Fairfield, she takes over for David Tijerina, who is moving to Shawnee Middle School.


Dr. Derek Leininger, Glenwood Park Elementary School Principal

Derek Leininger joined FWCS in 2007 as a social studies and history teacher at Northwood Middle School. He completed his administrative internship during the 2105-16 school year at the FWCS Career Academy. The following year, he was named assistant principal at Towles Intermediate School, which included overseeing Towles New Tech Middle School, and later became assistant principal at Snider High School. At Glenwood Park, he replaces Dr. Crystal Bush, who is retiring.


David Tijerina, Shawnee Middle School Principal

David Tijerina joined FWCS in 2019 as the assistant principal at Fairfield Elementary where he was named principal a year later. He came to FWCS from Anderson Community Schools where he worked from 2013 as an elementary, middle and high school principal. He served as a middle school English teacher in North Adams Community Schools from 1992-2013. He will become principal of Shawnee Middle School beginning with the 2022-23 school year


Zachary Harl, South Side High School Principal

Zachary Harl joined FWCS in 2001as a substitute teacher before taking on a full-time math position at Memorial Park Middle School in 2002. In 2009, he became a building coach at Memorial Park where he stayed three years until serving his administrative internship at Northwood Middle School. In 2014, he became assistant principal at Portage Middle School, and in the fall of 2017, he became assistant principal at Blackhawk Middle School. A year later, he became principal at Blackhawk. At South Side High School, he returns to his alma mater. He replaces Adam Swinford, who is moving to Northrop High School.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
