Portage Middle School - About Us
![]() |
Portage Middle School was built in 1960 in an area that was part of a 9-mile path that served as a vital connection between Quebec and New Orleans. Portage is a French word that means "carry over." Early travelers carried their canoes from the St. Marys River (at a site between Lafayette and Clay streets) to the Little Wabash River going over the land on which this school sits. The swampy area was later used as a celery field before the school was built. |
